Crucial T710 2TB M.2 PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD Review

Layout, design and features …

The T710 M.2 SSD is available exclusively in the 2280 format with or without a heat sink and is Crucial’s current top-of-the-line consumer model. It is the direct successor to the T700 and the T705, with the T700 being the first Gen5 SSD that Crucial launched in the desktop sector in 2023. Crucial now offers several Gen5 models, which differ mainly in terms of performance and power consumption and thus appeal to different target groups. The T710 is designed for high-performance desktop PCs and laptops, but is also suitable for use in a PS5, where it is limited to Gen4 by the PS5’s hardware.

After removing the standard plastic sticker from our coolerless T710 with 2 TB storage capacity, the components of the SSD are revealed.

Unlike the P510, the T710 uses a Silicon Motion SM2508 high-performance controller that supports up to 8 flash memory channels and is manufactured using a TSMC 6nm process. Although a genuine high-performance controller has been installed here, Crucial promises 25% lower power consumption compared to the T705 SSD. Specifically, Crucial specifies 8.25W for the T710 and 11.25W for the T705.

The familiar TLC 3D NAND memory modules with 276 layers from Micron are used again for data storage, each offering 1TB of storage capacity. Since the service life of memory modules is not unlimited, we are naturally also interested in the expected service life. Crucial specifies the lifespan as 600TB of written data per 1TB of storage capacity, which gives us 600TB, 1200TB, and 2400TB for the models with 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB of storage capacity, which is unlikely to be reached by most users. You would have to write more than 650GB of data per day over a period of 5 years to a T710 with 2TB of storage to reach the specified lifespan.

The controller is supported by 2GB DDR4 with 4266MT/s, located on a single chip between the controller and the memory modules. DDR4 cache ensures the shortest response times for small write operations and optimizes the performance of the SSD.

There are no components on the back of the T710 with 2TB.

The components used are of the highest quality, allowing us to be optimistic about the following benchmarks.
