Asus ROG Thor 1200W Platinum Power Supply Review

Layout, Design and Features …

The Thor presents itself at first glance in a simple, black look with ROG logo and some silver-grey decorations on the left side.

The exterior workmanship is of high quality and clean. Altogether the Power Supply looks very high-quality and all smooth surfaces are additionally protected with adhesive foil.

The front right corner is angled and decorated with the lettering Thor. Underneath is another Rog logo on the right side of the Power Supply, which is recessed in contrast to the left side. Why this is so is obvious when you take a closer look at the packaging. Both the ROG logo, the Thor lettering, and an edge running across the right side are backed with aRGB lighting, so that you can achieve an absolutely individual look of the power supply with a controller or the matching motherboard.

But the real highlight of the power supply, besides its brute power, is the OLED display on the other half of the right side, which shows in real time what power is needed.

Some examples for the illumination and the function of the OLED display are shown in the following video. Have fun with the Asus Rog Thor 1200W video on our OCinside YouTube Channel.

The only point we noticed in the test concerns the control of the addressable RGB lighting. It is (as with the Asus ROG Ryujin 360 AIO) only possible to control them correctly when using an Asus Aura compatible motherboard or controller. With the ASRock motherboard we used, we could only change the lighting in one color. For the video we needed a second system to take over the aRGB control of the lighting.

Now that we’ve covered most of the criteria from the outside, we’d like to take a closer look at the internal design of the Asus Rog Thor 1200W Power Supply. The Asus Rog Thor is equipped with a 135mm fan, which you rarely hear during operation, as it is very quiet …

… and thanks to the adjustable 0dB mode even completely switches off at low power consumption.

High-quality capacitors from Japan have been used to guarantee efficient operation and a long service life. In addition, Asus has not been without large ROG heat sinks. These improve heat dissipation and thus extend the service life of the components. Better cooling extends the service life of the components and greater heat distribution improves heat dissipation.

Of course, we would also like to mention the 80 PLUS Platinum certification, which guarantees an efficiency of 92% at 50% load and 89% at 100% load!
