Thermaltake Toughram XG RGB 16GB DDR4 2x 8GB DDR4-3600 White RAM Review

Now we come to another important part of the review: Performance! Since we already started the tests with the black Thermaltake Toughram XG RGB DDR4-3600 we take over the results at this point, because the white color does not achieve better results … even if RGB is of course always faster than without RGB lighting 😉

Test systems …

We test the memory modules on two AMD systems this time:
1) System
AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
MSI X470 Gaming M7 AC
Sapphire RX5700XT Nitro+ SE

2) System
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
MSI B550 Tomahawk
Sapphire RX5700XT Nitro+ SE

For comparison, we used Patriot Viper 4 3200MHz CL16 modules. Stability was tested with Memtest86, and we used SiSoftware Sandra Lite 2020 and AIDA64 as benchmarks. By the way, the latest version of SiSoftware Sandra and AIDA64 is available for download on our server and can be downloaded there at high speed. The CPU-Z download can also be found there.

Patriot Viper4 DDR4 3200MHz Test System 1 (AMD Ryzen 7 2700X) …

Test system #1 ran with the Patriot Viper4 3200MHz CL16 to date, the 2nd system was built for the test and also tested with the Patriot memory first for better comparison. This gives us reference values with which we can better compare the Thermaltake Toughram XG RGB DDR4 3600MHz CL18.

First the screenshot from CPU-Z version 1.94 with 1599.1MHz / DDR4-3200 CL 16-18-18-36-75-1T.

CPU-Z shows the following SPD timings here.

In addition, the results of the SiSoftware Sandra benchmark test:

Frequency Timing Memory Voltage RAM Bandwidth Integer B/F AVX512/512 Memory Transaction Throughput Memory Latency
1599.1 MHz SPD/XMP 16-18-18-36 1.336 Volt 35.09 GB/s 5.19 MTPS 58.03 ns

Now the tests in the 2nd system with an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X CPU on the MSI B550 Tomahawk.

We can do without the CPU-Z screen, since they are the same modules and only the clock speed has increased by 0.5MHz to 1599.6MHz.

In addition, the results of the SiSoftware Sandra benchmark test:

Frequency Timing Memory Voltage RAM Bandwidth Integer B/F AVX512/512 Memory Transaction Throughput Memory Latency

Thermaltake Toughram XG RGB DDR4-3600 Dual Channel System 1 …

Let’s move on to the Review of the Thermaltake Toughram XG 3600MHz CL18, first in System 1.

Now we come to the test in the 2nd system.

Here is the result of the SiSoftware Sandra benchmark tests:

As you can see from the results, the two memory modules have a close head-to-head race, but the Thermaltake Toughram XG RGB always stays a little bit ahead and thus wins the comparison!

The attentive reader will notice in the 2nd system that the Thermaltake Toughram drops by half in the AIDA64 write throughput. However, this is not due to the memory in this case, but to the CPU! The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is only equipped with one CCX and not like the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X or higher with two CCX. Since it is thus only connected to the IO/memory controller with one CCX, this unfortunately ensures the halved write performance. The Zen+ rather rarely go beyond 3200MHz, anything above that is only possible with a lot of luck.

Furthermore, the memory modules remain very cool around 36-40° during the entire test period. By the way, the temperature can be read out via the Thermaltake Toughram software. The same goes for the JEDEC frequency and the XMP profile. In addition, the CL and tRCD timings. Other manufacturers offer a lot more.

Last but not least, we of course take a look at the RGB lighting, which comes out even a bit better with the white modules :rgb:
